Peter
Gowers, Managing Director of Panadent handed over his
presidential chain of office to Peter Rees, General Manager
at Dentsply at the BDTA’s Midwinter Meeting on 7
December 2005 after serving over two years in the post.
Peter Gowers highlighted a number of achievements to
an audience of over 100 BDTA members at the event. He
said, ‘I started my presidency with two main goals.
One was to make the Association more open and transparent
and the second was to start promoting BDTA standards
and values to the profession.’ The BDTA has embarked
on a strategy of promoting BDTA members to the dental
team under the ‘Suppliers You Can Trust’
theme and this is to continue throughout 2006. Peter
was also passionate about the development of dental
statistics for members and strongly supported the Association’s
magazine Dental Trader, both of which have improved
enormously during his term of office. The BDTA is incredibly
grateful to Peter for all his hard work as President
and on behalf of all the members wishes to express sincere
thanks to him for his efforts.
We
all now look forward to the fresh ideas which will be
injected into the Association by Peter Rees. At the
Midwinter Meeting Peter Rees revealed his theme for
2006 to be ‘New Contracts, New Contacts’
which will fit in superbly with the changes occurring
in the dental industry. Peter Rees commented ‘I
wish to continue the good work of our recent President
and grow the active membership. We have members who
take part and those who don’t, let’s increase
those that do!’ The first step towards involving
members in BDTA activities was the announcement of one
complimentary place per member at the BDTA’s Annual
Conference in June. Simon Gambold, General Manager at
Henry Schein, has been elected as Vice President of
the Association.
The effects of the new contract on the industry was
the focus of the Midwinter Meeting with speeches from
Ruth Gasser, Department of Health, David Smith, Past
President of the DLA and Stephen Hancocks OBE.

BDTA is pleased to announce the launch of its re-designed website.
The enhanced editorial and picture content makes the website
more informative, the re-organization of the content makes
the site more user-friendly to both the trade and the profession.
The site reflects the corporate image developed by the Association
throughout 2004, including a more heavily- branded home page
and a link to the official Dental Showcase website (www.dentalshowcase.com).
BDTA information has been separately targeted towards the trade and professionals
to highlight the BDTA ’s relevant services to each group. For professionals,
the BDTA website promotes the importance of buying from and dealing with BDTA

encouraged to train their staff, through the Introduction to Dentistry course,
which means that suppliers have pertinent dental knowledge and a basic understanding
of the industry.
The News page will be updated regularly about the latest activities and achievements
of the BDTA and member companies.
In alphabetical order, member information has been tabulated for easier access
to details about BDTA member companies. Contact information, business type and
a short profile are all on display.
The names of BDTA Council and Committee members are displayed. The BDTA values
the efforts of members of the trade who volunteer their time to promote the Association

So far, feedback from visitors and exhibitors
has been extremely positive, with many identifying
this year’s Showcase as the best ever! The
BDTA is particularly grateful to the exhibitors
who have already been in contact to reveal that
they had the busiest and most successful show to
date.
The BDTA stand, F01, was extremely busy across the three days. Almost 500 members
of the dental team completed a questionnaire researching buying habits towards
equipment and oral hygiene products. Many of these visitors have agreed to
join the BDTA’s dental research panel which is being established to enable
research to be carried out into such things as Dental Showcase and buying habits
and attitudes.
There was also great interest from trade visitors regarding membership of the
BDTA and the Association looks forward to welcoming a number of new members
in the coming months.
The BDTA members directory compiled for the dental team was available to all
visitors during the exhibition, promoting the benefits of purchasing from BDTA
members. The popularity of the BDTA branded mugs was staggering and the Association
is pleased that the BDTA brand and web address is now on display in dental
practices across the country.
The BDTA stand was probably at its busiest at the end of each of the three
days when, primarily dentists, but also other members of the dental team, wanted
to claim their verifiable CPD hours for time spent at the exhibition. Certificates
will be sent out in November together with a feedback survey to gauge post-show
opinions of the event, to all those who had their badges scanned as they arrived
and left the exhibition.

IDS has developed dynamically, owing to the amenable trade
fair and exhibition policy of the Association of German Dental
Manufacturers (VDDI), Cologne, which in conjunction with
Koelnmesse organizers this leading international trade fair.
The number of IDS exhibitors has doubled over the past 10
years, while visitors have increased by 26 % . The excellent
results of IDS 2003 is an encouraging sign for the success
of the forthcoming event. The survey also revealed that more
than 80 % of the circa 1,400 suppliers from 49 countries,
and some 63,000 trade visitors from 134 countries posted
good or very good results at the last IDS.
In 2005 in the number of joint participations (Pavilions) organized in conjunction
with state or private export promotion organizations and associations abroad
will increase. In addition to exhibitor groups from Argentina, Brazil, Finland,
France, Israel, Italy, Korea, Russia, Sweden, Spain and the USA, represented
in 2003, the Australian Dental Industry Association (ADIA), the Japan Dental
Trade Association and the Chinese Ministry of Health have confirmed participation
with group stands.
VDDI and Koelnmesse have provided the ideal conditions for IDS expansion- in
addition Halls (13 and 14), the fair will incorporate Hall 10 for the first
time cover a gross exhibition space of ~ 107,000 m². The new Hall is especially
well received by the companies desiring a larger exhibition space. Moreover,
the new hall occupancy brings into play an additional attractive entrance area
with generous infrastructure and a wide range of service facilities. This will
therefore improve the visitors’ comfort and expedite the registration
process. However, advance registration via the Internet (available autumn 2004)will
be the quickest way for visitors access to the exhibition, as admission tickets
sent by post, allowing use of public transportation in Cologne no extra charge.
Progress has been made in getting to the Cologne area: Köln-Bonn
Airport is now the hub for several low-cost airlines: six
airlines currently connect Cologne to more than 50 European
cities at very favourable prices. And the time in getting
from the airport to the exhibition centre station is just
14 minutes, thanks to the new S-Bahn (suburban train) connections
which operate several times an hour. What’s more, Koelnmesse
Service GmbH is offering an extended range of services, meeting
the individual needs of trade fair guests with accommodation
in 70 selected partner hotels—from luxury hotels suites
to simple guest house quarters –all at excellent value
for money.

The
32nd edition of International EXPODENTAL will be held in Pavilions
20 & 21 of the fairgrounds Fiera di Milano in from Wednesday
- Saturday, October 20-23, 2004.
The exhibition Secretary has set up a program of new initiatives for the event
-which has always focused on the improvement of the services offered to the exhibitor
as well as the visitor- besides incorporating improvements already consolidated
in the previous editions.
Between January & September, a series of pre-Expodental exhibition workshops
will be held in Chicago, Moscow, Tripoli, Teheran, New Delhi, Warsaw & Prague,
with presentations aimed at dealers, producers & other dignitaries.
An advertising campaign will concentrate, in addition to the Italian dental reviews,
on international dental publications which have a wider and more diverse visibility.
Besides
these new measures, the website www.expodental.it has
undergone renovation, offering complete & continuously
up-dated information to the users at the exhibition.
Exhibitors can complete the application form on-line,
with cost calculation; visitors can complete the user-friendly
registration form to receive the entry badge directly
at home, with which they may enter the show free of
charge.
As in the previous editions, inside the pavilions, there will be the Dealers’ Area
(reserved for the operators) & the Expo Lounge (reserved for the exhibitors).
Service areas featuring restaurants, bars, self- service areas, & a Baby
Area for children will be available to the public.
The aim of the Secretary is to maintain the high interest & visibility of
the Expodental in this difficult economic period, in order to ensure a valid
commercial opportunity for the entire sector. The organizers were reassured by
the Expopage survey results, undertaken immediately following the last event.
The research, based on the satisfaction level of the visitors, gave extremely
good results.
The survey shows that 36% visit Expodental for an up-date on the latest news, with
22%, to plan future purchases. Concerning product diversification, it emerges
that the products at Expodental satisfy all categories of the sector. In fact,
to the question “What are the most interesting products?” 48% answered
products for the dental practice, 27% products for the dental labs, 14% products
for the oral hygiene, 11% other. To the question “Do you think your visit
to Expodental was useful?”
63% answered yes a lot, 31% yes. And as to the future participation in the next
Expodental, 87% of the answers were positive, whilst 12% are still planning the
visit.

The official website for International Dental Showcase 2003 proved very popular
with members of the dental team who visited the site daily for an updated list
of exhibitors and to get directions to the exhibition at the NEC. User hits
on the website from May-November 2003 reached a staggering 25,000, with traffic
increasing as the show drew closer. More people than ever before Advance registration
was at an record high via the website.
The
British Dental Trade Association, organizer of the most successful dental
exhibition in the UK, is encouraging advanced registration for London Dental
Showcase 2004. Early registration is increasingly important to the success
of the show. With the exhibition becoming more widely known and attended,
advance registration allows visitors to receive their complementary entry
tickets by post, an alternative to queuing on exhibition days. And as an
added incentive, this year advance will save visitors the £10 on-the-day
fee, which is charged to cover the cost of employing registration operatives
over the three days. Tony Reed, Executive Director at the British Dental
Trade Association, comments that ‘The BDTA is delighted to be able
to continue to offer complementary entrance tickets to all those who register
in advance. However, for those who do not register, there will be a nominal
charge to cover the cost of registration facilities on site’.
London Dental Showcase 2004 at the ExCeL, London, England, October 14-16, 2004,
provides an excellent opportunity for members of the dental team to view the
dental industry’s latest product & service developments, all conveniently
displayed under one roof. Over 150 organizations will be exhibiting and over
6,000 visitors are expected to attend.

The signs for the IDS 2005, April 12 – 16, 2005 in Cologne indicate growth:
Since Cologne became the permanent site for IDS in 1992, International Dental
Show (IDS) experienced dynamic development. The number of exhibitors has doubled,
and visitors have increased by 26%. At the IDS 2003, a record 1,400 suppliers
and 63,000 trade visitors from 134 countries contributed to the outstanding
success of IDS. And the organizer, the Association of German Dental Manufacturers
(VDDI), expects similar success in 2005.
And in keeping with this growth-orientation, The VDDI, in cooperation with
its partner, KölnMesse, will implement improvements at the 2005 event.
In addition to the well-known Halls 13 and 14, the IDS will occupy Hall 10,
and expand the gross exhibition space to 107,000 m². As a result, the
extra space equipped with a full range of service facilities will provide the
exhibitors with even better quality during the event.
The expansion of the exhibition space is not only to the advantage of the exhibitors.
Visitors will particularly benefit from the convenient features of the Entrance
Hall 10/11. The additional entrance will expedite registration and entrance
control, and will offer a spacious infrastructure, featuring attractive catering
facilities.
The IDS 2005 will be open from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. every day. Beginning
in 2005, visitors will have the opportunity to spend all day Saturday in viewing
the world’s most unique range of dental products, and to gather information
and to cultivate important contacts.
April 12, 2005, the opening day of the trade fair, as in previous years, will
be reserved for the specialist dental trade, who will also be invited to relax
in the IMPORTERS' & DEALERS' LOUNGE, located in the Offenbachsaal.
Once again it will be party time! Following the debut of this fantastic event
organized for the IDS 2003 by the VDDI, the Dental Community will celebrate
again in 2005 with an international party.
The registration forms for the IDS 2005, can be downloaded from the Internet
in the “AUSSTELLER” (exhibitors) section.

New BDTA PresidentThe British Dental Trade Association
is pleased to welcome Peter Gowers, Managing Director
of Panadent Ltd, as its new President. This was officially
announced at the BDTA’s Midwinter Meeting, held
at the Royal Institute of British Architects, in December
2003. Peter will be supported by Vice-President Peter
Rees, Managing Director of Dentsply Ltd.
Peter Gowers has served on the Council and Finance and
Executive Committees for several years and has chaired
a number of key BDTA committee meetings over the past
ten years. He is one of the strongest forces behind
the BDTA’s collection and distribution of dental
market data. Commenting on his role as President, Peter
said, ‘With a more youthful perspective than past
BDTA Presidents, I look forward to working with the
BDTA team and, in particular, younger future managers
of member companies in the coming year to energetically
build the brand. Our objective is to increase awareness
of the BDTA values amongst the profession’.
